Natural colors are composed from narrowband data. Channels are balanced so, that image match to visible spectrum, H-a + 24%S-II=Red, O-III=Green and O-III + 15%H-alpha=Blue.
Images are mainly Red due the dominance of Hydrogen. Ionized Hydrogen glows light at wavelengtht of deep Red,656,6 nm. Principle is about same as in fluorescent tubes but much dimmer.

A study about the Colors: http://astroanarchy.blogspot.com/2009/11/colors-in-astro-images.html

Please, use a full screen and click the image, to see them as large as possible!
